These days, life expectancy in the usa hovered around 77, but in the so-called “Blue Zones”, it is significantly longer. In fact, it is not uncommon for citizens of these regions, which include Sardinia, Icaria, Okinawa, Nicoya, and Loma Linda, to live past 100 years. So if you are looking to extend your lifeit goes without saying that you will want to take inspiration from their food and drink habits.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find processed beverages like sodas, sugary juices, and sports drinks in a Blue Zone resident’s refrigerator. In all blue zones, it is common to serve water with meals and to drink it between meals throughout the day.

“Water is essential for living longer because it helps the body eliminate toxins, maintain normal blood pressure, transport nutrients, balance electrolytes and boost metabolism,” says Nataly KomovaMS, RD to Just CBD. “Drinking enough water daily can improve body function, increasing your long-term lifespan.”

According to Mayo Clinic, about 50-70% of your body is made up of water. Not only that, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that it helps protect your spinal cord, lubricates and cushions your joints, and ensures your body maintains a normal temperature.

Of course, not all drinking water is created equal. Not only that, but research has found that chronic coffee consumption may protect against certain neurodegenerative diseases and is associated with lower risks of liver disease and cancer.

That said, it’s important to note that adding sugar, cream or flavored syrups to your drink can negate the health benefits of coffee– so do as the Blue Zoners do and drink it black. Or, if it tastes too bitter or sour for you, just add a little almond or oat milk.

Good news if you’re a firm believer that wine enhances any good meal: residents of the blue zone, especially those of Sardinia and Ikaria, don’t tend to go without a glass or two of high quality dry red. Specifically, Sardinians are known to appreciate a regional red called Cannonauwhich contains two to three times more flavonoids, antioxidants that help your body ward off daily toxins and other potentially harmful molecules.

According to Komova, red wine contains large amounts of resveratrolan antioxidant that can help reduce levels of “bad” LDL cholesterolreduce inflammation and prevent damage to blood vessels.

Even better, a 2018 study in the journal Diseases found a link between moderate alcohol consumption and lower mortality risk, with the lowest mortality at one or two drinks a day.

Remember, though, that less is more when it comes to drinking wine. If you exceed the recommended one glass a day as a woman or two as a man, the health risks can begin to outweigh the benefits.

“While moderate alcohol consumption can have beneficial health effects, alcohol can also make certain health conditions worse,” says Jeanette KimszalRD “In addition, the quality of alcohol in blue areas may be better than in the United States, where wine may contain preservatives and additives that may affect the gut microbiome.”

According to Hunnes, tea is a daily staple in many Blue Zones, especially in Okinawa, where residents can be found healing a large serving of green tea all day.

“Green tea is rich in catechins and polyphenols with antioxidant properties, which prevent disease by fighting free radicals, regulating cholesterol, stabilizing blood pressure and improving cell division,” says Komova. “All of these benefits extend your lifespan.”

A 2007 study in Nutrition advice found that green tea consumption was associated with better overall cardiovascular health, while another 2017 review in Phytomedicine found a potential link between drinking green tea and improving memory.

As a bonus, a 2013 study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that drinking green tea can significantly reduce fasting blood sugar, helping to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, epigallocatechin gallate, a specific type of antioxidant in green tea, can help inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors, according to a 2011 study in Examination of cancer metastases.
