Ex-girlfriend says Paul Murdaugh’s parents allowed heavy drinking before SC boating crash

Paul Murdaugh’s former girlfriend has detailed in court papers how the Murdaugh family allowed Paul to drink excessively as a minor, before a fatal boating accident in 2019.

In an affidavit filed Thursday in Hampton County, Morgan Doughty said she knew firsthand how her ex-boyfriend Paul Murdaugh drank excessively, how Murdaugh’s parents funded him and allowed him to do so. that he was underage, and how Doughty has videos to prove it.

The February 2019 boating accident, which killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach and shone the first spotlight on the Murdaugh legal dynasty, sparked a civil lawsuit against the Murdaugh family and Parker convenience stores. It has been more than three years since the complaint was filed.

Doughty’s filing comes a day before a Friday hearing in Lexington County in the boating accident case, where attorneys for imprisoned patriarch Alex Murdaugh are expected to plead to have the “sequestrationwhich monitors and reviews Murdaugh’s finances. Alex Murdaugh is in jail awaiting trial for stealing $8.4 million from clients and colleagues.

The boating accident lawsuit accuses the Murdaughs of negligence by allowing Paul Murdaugh to drink before the boating accident and Parker for allowing him to buy beer using his older brother’s ID card.

But since then Paul, 22, and Maggie, 52, Murdaugh were both found shot dead on June 7, 2021 at the “Moselle” homestead in Colleton County. Their still unsolved murders have caused all aspects of the Murdaughs’ lives to be singled out by police, prosecutors, media and the public.

Doughty’s file sheds more light on the behavior that led to the fatal boating accident that first drew attention to the Murdaugh surname.

Videos showing Murdaugh being drunk

Paul Murdaugh, son of Alex Murdaugh, “drank alcohol almost daily and drank regularly to the point of becoming seriously intoxicated”, a fact known to members of his family, according to Doughty’s affidavit.

Murdaugh regularly drank to intoxication in front of his family members, according to the affidavit. He drove cars and boats while under the influence, and Murdaugh’s parents gave him money to buy alcohol, according to the document.

In the affidavit, Doughty lists 22 videos and screenshots of those videos, which she took prior to the boating accident where Paul Murdaugh was drunk with his family or was activated by his family.

They include:

A video taken on July 4, 2018, where Doughty administers an injection to Murdaugh’s father, Alex Murdaugh. She said Paul Murdaugh was on the boat and also intoxicated.

A video taken on December 31, 2018, where Paul Murdaugh was intoxicated by alcohol supplied by his father, the affidavit states. Afterwards, “Paul drove Alex’s truck, with Alex’s knowledge, and was wrecked in one of Paul’s friend’s BMWs. Alex paid cash to repair the car after the collision,” the document states.

A video taken in December 2017, where Paul Murdaugh is intoxicated in Moselle, due to alcohol he bought with his brother’s identity card and “with the knowledge of his parents”, said Doughty. “Paul’s mother came to pick us up that night because Paul was so drunk and acting crazy,” the document says.

A video, undated, taken from a party in Moselle where “Alex provided a keg of beer to several miners”, and Buster saw his brother drunk.

A video taken at the Boathouse restaurant on the island of Hilton Head, where Paul used his brother’s ID to buy alcohol, while Buster used his passport. “Paul’s parents were present and knew and paid the liquor bill,” the affidavit states.

The last two videos were from a wedding in 2018, where Paul had become drunk and his parents were there and knew of his condition, the document states. “Alex and Maggie had a fight on the way home that night because Alex also took a painkiller and got aggressive. We dropped Alex off at his parents on the way home because of his aggressive behavior.

Behavior detailed in legal filing is consistent with revealed image of Paul Murdaugh when he was taken to hospital following the boating accident that killed Beach on February 24, 2019. He was belligerent, unruly and appeared to be intoxicated, according to earlier reports from the Island Packet & Beaufort Gazette newspapers.

If such behavior matters now, it’s because of the way the police deviated from usual practice during the investigation of the browsing under the influence offense and how Paul Murdaugh’s father, Alex, tried to interfere with the police investigationprevious report revealed.

His actions sparked speculation in the community that the powerful family was trying to use their influence to cover up Paul Murdaugh’s actions.

Paul Murdaugh comes from a long line of attorneys, most of whom controlled the five counties’ 14th Judicial Circuit prosecutor’s office. Her father, Alex, a former partner at the Hampton law firm that her great-grandfather founded, found himself the subject of a lawsuit brought by the Beach family after the crash.

Paul Murdaugh’s behavior reportedly continued even after he was charged, while his family fought Beach’s lawsuit. Then Paul Murdaugh was killed. It is unclear how his prior actions fit into his murder. Police have not announced any suspects or motives.

Alex Murdaugh has been named as a person of interest in the murders of Paul and Maggie. Since then, the patriarch has faced dozens of lawsuits and criminal charges for financial malfeasance.

But, according to the latest affidavit, it can all be traced to drinks on a boat and a family allowing the excessive drinking to occur.
