Jets vs Canadiens Odds, Picks and Predictions

The Winnipeg Jets need to snap a few wins together or they can kiss their chances goodbye in a playoff run. Luckily, they get the Montreal Canadiens and third-string goaltender Samuel Montembeault tonight. We like the Jets in our betting picks.

This could be considered a must-watch game for the Winnipeg Jets as they bid for the second wildcard spot in the NHL playoffs, but will Montreal play the spoiler? We have our eyes on the favorite road in our NHL Betting Picks and Predictions.

The Jets haven’t played their best hockey streak lately, but they’re just seven points from the wild card.

The Habs, meanwhile, have been looking for revenge since losing 8-4 at Winnipeg in the last meeting between these teams.

Jets vs Canadians picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based on our analysis of the line and total in this match. Our best bet is our preferred choice in all markets.

Moneyline Analysis

The Winnipeg Jets could miss some key parts of their roster tonight with Blake Wheeler unlikely to play and Mark Scheifele already ruled out. They are two of the Jets’ top 5 scorers, so Winnipeg will need role players to stand out tonight. The Jets haven’t been very good lately as they are 1-3-1 in their last five games, but they are coming off a huge win yesterday against the Ottawa Senators. Kyle Connor and Pierre-Luc Dubois each scored power-play goals and are the two players the Jets will rely on the most for offensive production in the absence of Wheeler and Scheifele.

The Montreal Canadiens had an extra day off against Winnipeg, but it hasn’t been a great season for the Canadiens. The Habs have a ton of trepidation in goal right now with Carey Price and Jake Allen both injured, so the Habs will start Samuel Montembeault. Montembeault has had plenty of appearances this season, but he hasn’t had much success. He’s 7-14-6 this season with a 3.61 GAA and .896 save percentage. Tonight will be his first start since March 27.

The Jets should be able to outplay the Canadiens in the offensive zone since Montreal is a very mediocre defensive team, allowing the fourth most chances against per game at 11.93. Even with Wheeler and Scheifele out, the Jets are still a force on offense, especially with Connor, who has 42 goals and 42 assists in 70 games.

The Canadiens are the second-worst defensive team in the league, allowing 3.79 goals against per game. The last time these two teams met, the Jets scored eight goals and I love their chances on the road tonight with their backs completely against the wall.

Prediction: Jets Moneyline (-145 at BetMGM)

Covers NHL betting analysis

Over/under analysis

Both teams will start substitute goalkeepers tonight, so I expect more goals than usual. For the Jets, Eric Comrie will be making his 13th start of the season tonight. Comrie is 8-3-1 with a 2.68 GAA and .912 save percentage along with a 5.4 GSAx, which ranks him 17th among goaltenders.

Montembeault has a GSAx of -10.7, ranking 105th, so the Jets have the advantage between the pipes. That being said, both teams are capable of scoring goals and I expect to see some tonight.

In their previous five games, the Jets have scored 14 goals and allowed 21. In the same span, the Canadiens have scored 16 goals and allowed 21. Both teams are very weak defensively. Winnipeg’s power play has scored in two straight games and they should be able to convert again tonight as the Canadiens have the fifth-worst penalty kill unit, killing just 74.7% of the penalties they commit.

I’m not expecting very good performances from either goalie, Montreal isn’t the best offensive team, but the Canadiens have shown some ups and downs throughout the season.

Prediction: More than 6.5 (-120 at BetMGM)

Best bet

Even though the Jets are playing for the second time in a row, I really like their game against Montreal, especially in the special teams department. Comrie has been the best goaltender and the Jets are the superior offensive team overall.

One thing the stats can’t measure is desperation, and that’s exactly what the Jets are playing with right now. On paper, the Winnipeg should be considered a playoff team, but the Jets haven’t performed well enough to be one so far. They are in must-win mode, especially against the weaker teams in the league.

I think Connor and Dubois step in once again, like they did last night in Ottawa, and lead this team to a road win.

To take: Jets ML (-145 at BetMGM)
